6 St. Joseph House is a centre of imagination and friendship, created by people who are committed to finding ways to renew community values in our city - by working with people who are vulnerable to income and livelihood challenges.
Our vision is to inspire a sense of hope by encouraging people who have a passion to build a more inclusive community - to work together in ways that speak to the values of compassion, hospitality and friendship. We welcome people of diverse faiths and backgrounds to participate.
Our goal is to create a neighbourhood centre that fosters resourcefulness and creativity; a place where people can become engaged and contribute their talents to community enterprise and community arts activities. One of our hopes is that activities at 6 St. Joseph House will be an inspiration to other neighbourhoods.

Creating Community Economics with Local Currency

Here in Ithaca, New York, we've begun to gain control of the social and environmental effects of commerce by issuing over $105,000 of our own local paper money, to thousands of residents, since 1991. Tens of thousands of purchases and many new friendships have been made with this cash, and millions of dollars value of local trading has been added to the Grassroots National Product.

Mission: Time Banks USA’s mission is to build local economies and communities that reward decency, caring and a passion for justice.
History: Time Dollars™ began as an idea in a hospital room in the intensive care unit. Since then, the concept has grown, developed and flourished in the U.S. and overseas.
Supporters: The work of Time Banking has rested on the support of the many foundations and individuals who have given their resources, blessings, and energies.

At this time in history, humanity must choose between the health and well-being of our planet, humanity, and other lifeforms, or the further enrichment of the ruling elite. The choice is clear. The World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, World Economic Forum, and "Trade Agreements," such as the Multilateral Agreement on Investments (MAI) blatantly favor the rich over all environmental and human rights concerns (see http://www.tradewatch.org/). Civil society is now engaged in a tremendous struggle against these deadly institutions which value money over life.

LETS, (Local Ecenomic Trading System,) supports trading which results in win-win outcomes. This is to be contrasted to the more coercive types of behaviour often seen in communities which are short of money - "I've got the money, so you have to work for me." In LETS, there is never any obligation to trade.
