Welcome to The Toronto Dollar Press Room


Since its launch in December 1998, the Toronto Dollar project has enjoyed considerable coverage in the media. Radio and television, the CBC, CTV, Global and City TV have all aired stories. The national newspapers, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Sun, and the National Post have all had items on the Toronto Dollar.

David Suzuki,Margaret Atwood, Toronto’s Mayors, and Canada’s governor general are among the many public figures who have praised the Toronto dollar.  Since may 2010 nearly 50 new businesses have joined the Toronto Dollar.

Community Currency Makes a Comeback:
Seeks Volunteers

A special currency called Toronto Dollar is regaining popularity among merchants and their customers, primarily in the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood, but more volunteers are needed to spread the word about it.

The currency has been in circulation since 1998. It has the full buying power of a Canadian dollar, but it has an added feature—10 cents of every Toronto Dollar purchased is donated to local charities.

Glen Alan, executive director of the Toronto Dollar, says that over the past 12 years more than one million Toronto Dollars have been purchased by shoppers, and of that in excess of $110,000 has been donated to over 40 non-profit organizations....(Read More)
